green in the garden

I’ll be the first to admit, I’m not very green compared to some seattlelites…  I mean, I do my part and recycle what I can, but I don’t really go out of my way.  But I have been trying :)

One thing I’ve been doing is, using things I have on hand instead of buying new items…

Example:

I wanted a charming watering can:

but in efforts to reduce my carbon footprint I use an old bottle instead.  It takes up less space and hold the perfect amount of water to feed my cucumbers, jalapenos, strawberries, tomatoes, basil and ivy plant.   (on a hot day, I usually have to get a refill, but it works :)  Mostly, I love how space efficient it is :)

blue, oh how I love thee…

Blue has always been my favorite color since as far as I can remember.  I rarely remember anything from when I was little, but thinking back I actually remember a serious conversation when I was no more than 4 or 5, or maybe I was 10? (I have no concept of time) with my cousin and sister about our favorite colors.  Mine was blue, my sister’s was green and my cousin’s was purple and I think we decided we weren’t allowed to switch?   For my sister and I, the colors stuck (I do have the occasional fling with pink or yellow-so cute, how could I not?)  But blue will always be my forever love :)

I started a tiny garden on my deck and window sill and wanted to get some garden gear… When I say garden I mean: 2 tiny cucumber plants my MIL gave me and 1 tomato and basil seed kits that I’m attempting to grow and 1 strawberry plant that looks almost dead, oh and an avocado seed I’m growing and some thai basil I was able to get to sprout roots.  I came across the following, I’m in love with the look of the hunter wellington boots (or wellies to their fan base), but my legs are a touch too short, they sort of cut into the back of my knee when I bend and do a kimchi squat (if you don’t know what this is google images it :)-basically it’s a term used for the squat the korean’s perfected when making kimchi… I think? and since I don’t get very muddy on my deck, not sure if I really “need” them… but I love the color combinations of light blue, ivory and pinks and reds :)

I love this tub, I came across it at home depot last year, but Mark vetoed it because I had too much in my cart, but I think this year I might get 2.  My reasoning-they are stackable, so we can keep them together, 1 will be for a recycling bin and the other will be stacked away and pulled out for misc things (ie. when guests come over and I need a tub to put drinks and ice into, when I’m cleaning the house and I’m collecting odds and ends that trickled downstairs and that need to go back upstairs, or when my veggies start to grow, I can collect my bountiful harvest, and if the first one gets worn or cracked I have a back up.  Maybe I need 3… a backup for my backup?)

Currently, I have one aqua colored tub from target that’s been working well for our recycle bin.  This is the best picture I can find of it, but I think it’s a lighter and bluer color than this picture… but I’m wondering if I should just get another one of these, instead of the beautiful tub above.  This shape is a little easier to carry around and is a little more compact.

Weeders

My review for today?  The Weed Hound.

Weed HoundI read a lot of good reviews on it, so I bought one, but it didn’t fare better than my Grandpa’s Weeder.  Grandpa's WeederDon’t get me wrong, they both work well on certain weeds and certain soil conditions, but for the “gecko tailed” Dandelion, they both were a hit and miss.  So, I got a “green” weed killer called Burnout II, which is 11% citric acid.  Burnout II

I’ll test it out soon, and let you guys know…

a mysterious place…

Many years ago, before Steve and I were married, we went for a long drive along the I-90 corridor towards eastern Washington.  It was a hot and dry day.  So, we got off at a certain location, and tried to find a place to explore and walk around.  Unfortunately, at the place that we chose, the crickets were jumping into my legs, which I painfully remember to this day.  We left as quick as we came, and drove to the most unusual park.  We couldn’t believe it.  It looked like the Grand Canyon, with a blue pool of water, where people were water skiing and doing other water sports.  It was beautiful, but so strikingly different from the rest of western Washington.  The sad thing is, we both can’t remember where it is.  It seems like a dream that we shared together.  So, yesterday, we went for a drive to find it, but to no avail…  The location remains a mystery.  Anyone know of where I’m talking about?

A little dejected, we came back and gardened.  I pulled some weeds and transplanted 3 Viburnum Davidii in one of my garden beds.  Viburnum DavidiiWhew - it looks so much better.  Though, one still needs to be moved a tad bit.  They’re also a little spotty looking.  Hm…  I hope they’re okay.  Now, onto the other beds…

cross-country and back!

Okay, it’s my turn.  Though I’m not as prolific of a writer as my sister is, I still need to make a peek-a-boo appearance from time to time.  :)

So, I’m back from visiting Kansas City, Buffalo, and Toronto… Yup, cross-country in 9 days, and what a crazy, but blessed time it was.  Currently, we have 3 exchange students that have come under our wing in various ways and I went with them to a retreat and a conference.  We followed my parents, as my dad spoke at different places.  We managed to squeeze in Niagara Falls, which made the whole trip an amazing experience…  How blessed we were, even through some trying circumstances.  By the end, we had grown into a family…  Sigh - I love true fellowship….

Soon after I got back, I went with my hubby to Home Depot and got myself the Fiskars PowerGear Hedge Shears Fiskars PowerGear Hedge Shearsand the Bronco D-handle fork.Bronco D-Handle ForkI was so happy!  :)  Steve was surprised how quickly they put a smile on my face!  Sigh - I love tools/gadgets…  It’s a passion of mine.  So, once I get my travels out of my system, I’ll go back to gardening.  Yay - I’m so excited to use my new tools!  Though I need to buy some compost - the weeds are creeping back up!

Oh, here’s Steve’s tip for today (since he wanted the credit) and overall one of our all-time favorites.  If you have a loose screw screwed into a wooden background, like a door, unscrew the screw, put it off to the side, break up some toothpicks into the right size for the hole and stick them in the hole.  Then, re-drill!  Voila!

Rent a goat?

So, today, the weather in Seattle was so nice that Steve decided to do a little backyard cleaning… Well, I wanted to see his work, so I went to our backyard… And I was once again reminded of the blackberry bush making its way over the broken fence into our yard… Sigh…

A while back I had read that a local park had brought in 100 goats to clear the area of blackberry bushes and other invasive plants, so I got it in my head to do the same thing. But can I just rent one? The closest “rent a goat” is on Vashon Island… Hm, I wonder if there’s anything closer…

I also need someone to help me re-landscape our yard. It’s so bare, but definitely ready for some plantings…
